SMOAC: Oyster Bay

SMOAC this week was a stroll around Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline, in San Leandro. This is a little-known park-on-a-former-landfill that I know about because I had the honor of redesigning one of the recreation/picnic areas at the park. I tried to forget all the gross stuff I learned about the landfill and just enjoy the space, but it was hard not to at least talk about it! The first photos are pictures of the area that I re-designed - mostly regrading the lawns so they were flat enough to use but didn't have any low spots (one of the major problems on landfills is sitting water). In the process we had to remove a stand of trees and replant them, redo the irrigation, and regrade small parts of the paved trail.

Our hike took us down to the water's edge, where we discovered tiny crabs! And tiny shells! And big trash. But first we stopped by the "Rising Wave" sculpture by Roger Berry.

Windan Sea Beach (last morning)

Pictures from our last morning at the beach (no sunburn included!)

Sunset

Clara and I enjoyed some special time one evening by walking down to the beach to watch the sunset (and play on the rocks). Plus, she took some excellent photos of me! :)
