Game two: Zach vs Molly
Zach emerged victorious.
We played this game at the campground. I lost two games, one by 15 points!
- Molly
Game one: Clara vs Sofia
Sofia emerged victorious.
We took a hike and did game one. We also saw some beautiful wildlife and hanging gardens!

PS: the previous post was also done by me.
On our road trip we've gotten into the game Spot It, maybe you've heard of it. So I decided to do a tournament. Here's the invitation that I gave to the Zanklins. 😀
Settled in at Zion, beautiful site under the Watchman rock formation and right by the river. Only a little bit tricky backing it in. :)
Sitting out, watching the shooting stars, zach is playing guitar and the kids are munching ice cubes. It's still over 90 degrees out!
We spent a lovely afternoon at the beach with Stacy, Jesse, Charlie, and Georgie. The marine layer (aka fog) burned off as we arrived, and all the kids (plus Jesse) braved the bitterly cold water.
We are super excited to get moving again tomorrow! Nana and PA's dog Rex seems a bit excited as well. :)
Today's adventures included exploring the river, finding three (!) geocaches, and a long afternoon at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We were all exhausted by dinner time.
I've been reading about our upcoming stops to the kids and we are all getting excited to hit the road. Crossing our fingers that we can make it to the Mojave desert on the first night, but understanding that we might have to stop before we get there.
Picture is of Zach, molly, Charlie, and Jesse looking at tiny frogs in the river.
We made it to the Franklin's safely and without incident, but opted to sleep inside the house, rather than even try to back the trailer down their driveway at 10:30 at night. Tomorrow we will make that happen! (Really)
In the mean time, here's a picture of the gift we made last week for Zach's birthday... it's a home made Squatty Potty! Yup, that's the kind of family we are. :)
Even better? The entire thing was made from scraps we had in the garage. And the spray painting process, while it started with sister drama (she covered up my work!), developed into spray paint wars, and ended up with sister collaboration (and a very thick layer of spray paint!).
The checklist has been checked, the house and animals are in good hands, the truck and trailer are packed, and we are heading for our first stop: the Franklins in Carmel Valley.
First almost disaster: forgot to raise the hitch jack. Luckily, we noticed before any damage was done.
Getting ready for the big celebration on Sunday: unveiling of the Rumford sculpture on Sacramento Street!
We are inching our way to departure for the big road trip (5 1/2 weeks traveling around the West!). Nana and Pa are generously lending us their Airstream trailer for the summer (wow!), which will make this trip that much more awesome. However, we had one big puzzle piece to be solved with the trailer: where to put the kids. After thinking and internet reading and more of both of those, I think I worked out a solid solution! I adapted a cot to fit over the dinette bed to make a bunk bed.
We are doing a quick test run overnight at the farm, and by all appearances, the bed worked!
And of course we had to spend some time on the beach yesterday, even though we were not prepared with swim suits and towels. These resourceful kids made it all work out. And found lots of sand critters.
Yesterday, zach and the girls enjoyed an early morning g swim with Nana and Pa (who were coincidentally staying at a nearby hotel for a wedding this weekend), then some park time with their cousin, then off to the parade (which was kicked off with parachuters!), and, finally, we enjoyed the perfect view of the fireworks from Irwin's mom's rooftop! Perfect weather, great family time, and lots of fun!
After a lovely morning reading to cousin Adena, the girls and I are at the pier, enjoying the rides!
