Jockey, the Rhode Island Red

The chicks have gotten big - and one in particular has settled into the life of a beloved pet. The Rhode Island Red, who the girls call Jockey, or sometimes Bambi, is the calmest chicken I've ever met. The girls carry her around, act out all sorts of stories, and generally love her. I draw the line at bringing her in the house.

Charlie wants to know where your chickens come from.

Well, I'm pretty sure each of them came from an egg. :)

These chicks were bought from a feed store in Concord. In the spring, most feed stores on the other side of the hills sell chicks. The stores, in turn, buy their chicks from hatcheries, which deliver day-old chicks in sets of 25 (sent in the USPS mail).

Chicks can survive a certain number of hours (72?) on the yolk that they absorb when they come out of the egg. Sending 25 together keeps them warm.

Is that the information he was looking for? Let me know if he wants to know more.
